Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
Beautiful puzzle, using quad orphans.

very easy w/out orphans. Didn't even see the quads...will have to go back and try them

OK, tried the quads. Fun, but they slowed me down.

Karl + 1. Couldn't make it happen without orphans. Easy with orphans. Quads were fu. Can be very tricky but these were easy.

Joe, 4 numbers were gimmes. After that where did you focus to make more eliminations. Was there a row or column in particular that was the key?

Look at the 4's in 17A.

No orphans but didn't find it easy. The options in the bottom row were the key for me.

OK, I'm looking at the 4s in 17A but I'm not getting a message.

Too lazy to use the orphans. Made a lucky guess, and everything fell into place.

I'm with you, Paul - didn't get a msg either

Wish I knew how to do quads.

Carolyn, it's quite simple really. Calculate the total for D and A as usual. The difference is the amount by which the sum of either A or D is higher than the other. In this case iA is 11 higher than D, and because the D orphans can only add to 2 or 3 the A orphans must add to 13 or 14, which eliminates quite a bit.

Joe+1. no orphans.

U != 5 because 10A would be buggered if it was.

thus 17A = W/X/Y/Z = 89/12345/12345/12 so if X or Y is a 4 then Y or X must be a 3. If X=4 then 10A is buggered again. If Y=4 then X=3 and C=3 which buggers 21D. Thus H=4, etc...

Nothing but eliminating options in 17A by mental chains, More...

OK. I get it. Because you need XYZ to add to either 8 or 9 any 4 needs a 3. If Y is the 4 it takes a longish chain ti hit the wall but you still hit it. Anyway I did it without orphans. Thanks.

Used Quad to solve

1:44 from the saved position, but using a 'double chain' in X (4/5)

(without the quads, which made it trivial

Using me from here's logic, short enough chains imo, 2019
