Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
got 6 cells and used orphans but can't find a non-trial and error continuation

tried again ..... a short chain can show J!=5, therefore J=4 and it all falls into place. No doubt there are other solutions

6:07 Given earlier comments on difficulty used orphans. Also needed a short chain to continue.

After 6 squares filled, followed two possibility threads which both led to the same result for P - all fell into place from there.

Hello Ja, and welcome! An orphan is a number which only adds into one other group (ie column or row). To find the possibilities add all the column totals, and then all the row totals, and the difference is the total of the orphans, in this case 14. Hope this helps.

Another way to solve this is to try the implications of the two values that are possible for the orphans. One of them leads quickly to a contradiction.

7:08 - Needed orphans. Had to make a guess once I got a lot of cells to two possibilities, and my guess was wrong.
