Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

With orphans

18A can't be the 45 solution else there's an illegal non-unique quad 6789 in 38D and 39D. 3D=12 in that order else not enough 7's. no orphans needed

I wish I understood what you mean Chris. I can only get 5 cells even with orphans and would have to guess from then on. No fun in that so I will pass on this one.

Easy with orphans. We have had this debate before and while it may be true I've never been satisfied that the the 6789s in 38D and 39D constitute an illegal quad. Accepting that I nevertheless needed orphans to solve.,

Paul, concerning 'illegal quad' of 6789s, consider this: Assume that there is a valid solution involving these digits. Then if you were to flip the digits (pairwise) between the two columns, the two columns would still add up the same, and the four row-pairs would add up the same and involve the same digits, so that would be another valid solution, violating the uniqueness condition.

Great puzzle if you don't use orphans. So many eliminations to work out. Took me 22 min to solve.

16 with orphans and a chain (5 didn't go in V);
or was it a chain then orphans?
very good, Karl (I did that to satisfy myself a few weeks ago, but didn't mention it in comments).

I missed the 7s elim in the 2 middle cols (using orphans) the 1st and maybe even the 2nd time(s) thru!

Fine analysis, Chris - it took me a while to see the lack of 7s with 21 for 3D.
