Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
Easy nada to end the year

I missed what Slartibartfast saw. my nada attempt stalled after 12 cells, then very small chain solved the rest.

Don + 1

I put Q=4 and it all fell into place. I did it only because Aspie wrote that. Don't know whether I would have got there without possibilities.

my very small chain (probably similar to Aspie) - if B=4: CL=68 (but can't solve 16D). Was that similar to Slartibartfast, Luca, and/or Joe?

10:36 with a lot of guessing

nada - one of the easiest of all time. No chains. Don, you get to the point where L is 6 or 8, but J has to be 8, because none of the other three numbers in 14D can be bigger than 3, so L must be 6, which solves everything.

Mike, P<>4 and Y<>4 also seem to require short chains.

Don, I guess it's all in what you regard as a chain. I chain is needed when you can't see the answer and have to work through it. The shorter the chain, the closer you are to seeing it. Even the most obvious answers require a 'chain' of some sort. E.g., I started this puzzle with V=5 and W=1, More...

Redid nada no problem after I rethought possibilities for B.

Thanks Mike, agreed that we use same terms w/ different meanings. One person's 'intuitive conclusion' is called a 'guess' by someone else.

Thanks Paul. Regardless of B, JK contains 8 (solves 35D):
a) if B=4: 16D=4381
b) if B<>4: 15D=15324, 14D=8132
Or did someone find a shorter way?
