Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

good puzzle, never have caught on to the unique rule

Joe, the 5D can't be the 14 solution because that would form a unique rule failing triplet with 3D and 7D, as so:

12 124 14
12 124 14

which could resolve into a dual solution
1 2 4
2 4 1

and its inverse
2 4 1
1 2 4

It's the quad 3's (magic square RUWZ) in 15A and 16A that solve it for me.

I actually noticed the 3s cross in the bottom two rows and that solved it for me. Chris is right though about the offside triplets.
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
I'm still not convinced a 3x2 triplet is an automatic non-unique solution situation because the crossing columns (21D, 39D, and 7D) place restrictions on the 124 possibilities. In this case the 124's in 15A and 16A force O=4 which forces P=2 which thus doesn't allow for either of the 'non-unique' More...

To add a bit...I postulate that for the 'non-unique' solution situation to be 'automatic', it needs to be in a square pattern, [i.e. 2x2 (like the magic square 3's in this puzzle), 3x3, 4x4, etc.].

I agree this needs further analysis. On reflection I'm not convinced either. The 3s cross seals the deal by itself.
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
Yeah...this pair of 124 triples leads to NO solution where as a 'non-unique' situation leads to 2 or more solutions.

me and Paul, agreed there's another solving heuristic (3's cross eg), but the existence of dual solving routes can't, by itself, nullify the other heuristic.

it doesn't matter what is in the first cell of 7D, whatever of 124 it is, there is still the 124 triplet. And, if we got to the END of More...

me, you are saying (I think) that the 124 triplet can't exist anyway for another reason. True, but it also can't exist for its own internal reason, which is sufficient.

also, there may be a circular argument here, perhaps, in the puzzle, the other reason also depends ultimately on the 124 not existing ...? ;-)

Chris, I agree with your point(s). I think I am just guilty of over thinking the problem. Not wrong but bored :-)

This is very easy, really:

Start with top three in 39D.

Now: 5D must be {2,3} to fit enough 3's in the bottom two rows. Therefore 3D and 5D account for both 2's in those rows, putting 2 in P.

Therefore no 5 in O, so 5 in S.

Must be a 3 in the bottom two squares of More...
