Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
This one was borderline being challenging and too difficult. I kind of liked it though.

I guess there is no magic formula to help when their are 4 orphans? I would have thought the 4 would add up to the delta, but it doesn't work. Is there a different way to leverage them?

thought i could make it without using orphans, but nope! hint: you'll have to figure out the difference between the horizontal orphans and the vertical orphans, then figure out how the math is supposed to play out.

Ur - You can still show the sum of the vertical orphans minus the sum of the horizontal orphans is 12.

PS - This is quite useful in this case because the horizontal must sum to at least 5 - limits the orphan possibilities

UrBuddie, to explain my hint: I figured out that the difference between the horizontal/vertical orphans was 12, so B+Y = V+E+12. Since B = 8,9 and Y = 7,9 that means B+Y = 15/16/17/18. Since E >= 4, this means that V = 1,2 since 18 (max # for B,Y) minus 12 = 6. And also, E = 4,5. So the min More...

Jason/Steve,

Thanks for the hints. I was able to solve without the orphans, but I always like more tools to use.

4:55 dual pairs of orphans can be confusing, but are often helpful.

I got the difference between the vertical and horizontal orphans, but still got stuck for a while. Had i read Jason's post before i completed the puzzle, i would have got it much earlier - M is definitely the key to it.
