How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Yes it’s about 8s,9s - 9 total in non-orphan slots. I.e. Count across and note can’t have both 8 and 9 in 33A.
This forces 18D to be 189 in some order to be in 18D.
With this and other, not hard to show 33A is 345678 in some order - solving placement of 8 in 18D, 3 in 33A, … The remaining slots fill in with not much work.

Per 33A … 3 (and not 1) must be in 3rd slot of 21D and not 1 since 33D has one of 8,9 but not both. So, missing values from 33A are 813 or 912. I.e. 33A can’t have a 1. The second slot of 21D is 2 - this is from 189 in some order in 18D. … so 3 is in 3rd slot of 21D and missing values of 33D are 912… forcing 33A to be 345678.
