Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
nada, bit of a struggle in the middle of solving

A guess is required to solve this puzzle. An educated guess is still a guess.

Plus o. Then intuition which I suppose involves guessing. Although I knew what the orphans were it wasn't a slam dunk which was which.

Nada. It seemed logical, but Meredith is probably correct. After filling in the 11 obvious squares, you know that W = 5 or 6. That W=6 so Z=5 seemed logical because you need a 5 for 39D, but I suppose that's actually a guess.

No guessing. After obvious 11 squares, there is a 9s cross at KL and OP which solves the puzzle.

Mark: I see 10 obvious squares, not 11. My answer used the 9's cross, but I needed some preliminary work to get there, beyond what was obvious. What did I miss?

Mark: I take it back. The 9's cross *is* obvious after the first ten squares....

and okay....i'm seeing why you're calling the 11th square obvious also.

Even with the 9s cross, thanks Mark, & a few eliminations I still needed the second orphan to complete. Missed something.

Meredith - Do you consider use of Orphans logical?
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
Hi Mike - thanks for sharing your logic. Hopefully I have understood your cell notation: W and Z can both be 5/6 (as well as D, so 39D remains ambiguous) therefore, I don't see how you can choose, based on logic . . . but maybe I'm missing what you're saying (or simply don't see what you & other solvers apparently see)

Hi Mark - My remarks were aimed at the end game, as I had arrived at the 11 obvious cells right away. Would you please explain 'the 9's cross' to me? (I am assuming cell notation KL and OP to be the intersection of 33A and 34A with 30D and 30D). Even with this nudge, I don't see a logical solution. Perhaps seasoned puzzlers recognize a logistics that I am totally missing.

Hi Jimmy - I use orphans as a final fill so they really don't affect my approach, which (I'll tell you up front) is all possibilities for a sum culled by the intersection of other sums. The easy and medium kakuros are usually straight-forward, so I eliminate as I go - I imagine the rest of the More...

Meredith:

You say you found the 11 obvious cells, so I won't list them here. (I myself only found 10 of these at first; it took me some moments to realize that there was only one choice for J.)

Now the 9's cross: 33A and 34A both need 9's. Those 9's must occur in both of the More...

HA! Thank you Willo - a beautiful explanation. As you say, filling in the orphan makes 22A unique, and everything flows from there! Thanks much for taking the time to spell it out for me. I'll be better in tune in the future. And thanks Mike for your gentle encouragement ~ I am still More...

To add to Willo’s explanation, T now has to be 8, S = 5, W = 6 and everything falls in place without using orphans.
