Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
I got HITVZ and hit a major roadblock. I have to leave it for now and try again later.

UrBuddie - I agree. I got further than you, and I believe I proved that E & M = 1 or 2. Things were falling together nicely until my bottom row came up with contradictions. Don't know where I went wrong. Will have to try later.

Better than recent ones. Only two choices for the 3 in the 38. One leads to a contradiction.

Finally solved it. One of the most complicated I have ever solved, and lots of fun to do. My conclusion that E & M must be 1 or 2 is correct. Placement of the 3 in the second column is a key.

I also had that elimination, but it didn't seem to help much. I finally used a couple of extended logic eliminations.

A little late today, but with the hint, I tried to eliminate the right (incorrect) 3, but needed the 'undo' to do it - was down to my last 5 squares before I got the contradiction.

Steve - same thing happened to me in trying to guess which 3 to eliminate; got almost to the end before the contradiction appeared. 50-50 chance.

14:22 After getting HITUZ and a few other straightforward eliminations, I assumed B=5 which led to a contradiction. Then I assumed C= 9 which also led to a contradiction. From there it was quite straightforward.

Solved HITUZ cells. After computing sum of orphans:
1. if b=3 then
a. force orphans and Y=3 and solve 34 in 21D and 78 in 29D
b. because W forced to be 79: 9 forced in 27A and 38D and 16A; 6 forced in 38D
c. can't have multiple 5s in 17A (still 10 cells not placed)
2. Solve 3 More...

SOLUTION:
1. T=6, U=9
2. Z=8, I=5, H=9
3. Q=34, Y=34
4. E/N = 12
5. VWX=5679
6. NO=6789
7. P=78
8. RS=5689
9. FG=79, A=68
10. DL=578
11. K=456789
12. J/B=356789
13. Now we start
14. JK NOT 9
15. ORPHANS = 15 SO C=689, X=679
16. IF C=68 & D=7, More...

Another solution with orphans (I'm pretty sure this is really different from those above, but I might not have read them carefully enough):

1)Fill in HITUZ like everyone else.
2)Count the missing 8's and 9's. Going down, there are exactly seven (using the orphans to see this), so More...
