Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
Possibilities, orphans and a chain.

Nada

For anyone who might care: The nada solution that I originally posted to yesterday's hard puzzle contains a mega-serious typo, but I've reposted the corrected solution much farther down, near the bottom of the long comment thread (in the comment beginning 'Plum: I am relieved to discover...')

willo, I posted a response to your post yesterday, which I very much thank you for. I did still end up solving a different way, however. I had two screens going side by side. It was fun. I commented on your wonderful culprit logic and shared my solution (which you lead me towards) with on yesterday's page.

I used possibilities but I'm sure many of you can do this nada.

Short chains (mental-short chains for me looking at possibilities filled into the grid) eliminate possibilities and discover the 4 in 21A and the 8 in 39D.
Solve 20D
Solve 14A and space O
Solve 10A and 9A
Solve 39D
Solve 22D, 11D, 21A and 36A
Finish the puzzle

that should be 'discover the 4 in 21A THEN (after eliminating more possibilities and employing another short elimination chain) the 8 in 39D.'

nada
there are various ways to show R!=4
so, R=56 and it all falls out.
R!=4 because if R=4, M=5 and 36A is impossible.
Or R!=4 because
if M=5 then L=4 and R!=4
if M=123 then 9A=45 and R!=4

7:39 used one possibility. Timing doesn't count so much because want to get the nada so you keep looking longer than you should in case you missed something.

Kakuros are NP not P, in the sense that validating a solution is much faster than finding the solution.
Removing brute force solve techniques (trying all possible solutions until one works, or trying all possible trial and error (guessing) until one works), leaves various classes of puzzle, from More...

Thank you, Aspie for creating and explaining definitions that help us understand what you mean by nada and it's a function of the puzzle. It has been confusing because the same term has different meanings to different solvers. Now that we know the term can be applied st least two different ways we More...
