Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
with orphans, nice puzzle, quite easy

I don't know where you see that puzzle as easy.I used orphans and still took a chance on a chain

Orphans. Like big John.

No Orphans. 17D limits the possibilities for 27A

Easy is not the way I would describe that puzzle. I did not see any obvious route so took a chance on a chain and got lucky.

Plum, orphans are the squares which are part of A or D but not both. In this puzzle the orphans are at the bottom of 27D and the top of 31D. If you subtract the sum of the As from the sum of the Ds you get the total of the numbers in those two orphans. Sometimes there are 4 orphans and that can More...

With orphans solution:
The first 10 cells are easy, so from there

the 3's cross in 14D and 27D takes out the 3's in 13D. Another 4 cells solve easily from there.

There's now a 3s and a 4s cross in 27A and 24A, eliminating 3 and 4 from their other cells. So now the missing pair in More...

Thank you, Paul and Chris!!

I finally understand orphans. It makes sense, working backwards, since the exact same numbers are being added, once D, once A, except for the well-named 'orphans.' Ah-ha!

So, I used orphans as Paul explained, solved and measured my progress against Chris's More...

Or you can do what I did--add wrong when you calculate the orphans, and wreck the puzzle!

Needed orphans, no chains. Enjoyable puzzle.

No orphans, no chains - straightforward... Coyuldn't quite follow Chris' explanation, but here's my solution: SPOILER ALERT!!!

Assuming you can solve D,E,T,U,Z,Y pretty much straight away, fill in possibilities for the other two 17As, 14D, 13D and the two 27Ds.

Notice that J,L cannot More...

kakuroaddict - I'd like to follow what you're saying. Can you please explain the alphabetic notations? Is it for blank spaces reading across? Are there always 26 open cells in a kakuro?
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
Plum, yes, there seem to be always 26 cells in a hard kakuro... yes, the alphabetic notations are reading left to right, top to bottom.

As for 17A, 27D etc, these refer to [A]cross or [D]own clues with the number being the total for that clue, as shown in the grid.

No orphans, reasonably straightforward - 27A the key.

Straightforward, same as kakuroaddict, 2019

Great puzzle. 17D and 31D limit possibilities for 27A and 24A. There are 4 fields in 24A where 1234 goes, so that forves last 2 to be 59 or 68, solves 7 in 27D. Top orphan must be 2 and remaining 2 fields of 31D 56. So 27A is 234567. It creates a cross of 4 with 24A that solve 13D to be 841 and rest falls.
