Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
Seemed about as easy as yesterday's, but I did make use of the 'quad' orphans.

2:42 - What's going on with this site? The easys and mediums have been cranked up, while the hards are becoming pushovers; it still needs more work, but the logic was more straight forward.

Easy. Didn't need orphans but would like to know how to do quads.

very easy, no need for orphans (quads are difficult though)

Easy w/o orphans. Quad orphans are not hard, just take a little more thought. You first figure out what adds with what. In today's puzzle, C & X are orphans because they have no vertical component, while H & S are orphans because they have no horizontal component. Therefore, C+X = H+S. As you get the values by logic, you substitute them into the equation until you simply for answers.

Mike from LA: Your equation doesn't add up. In today's puzzle, (H+S)+2 = C+X, which means that the difference between the horizontal orphan pair and the vertical orphan pair adds up to 2.

The help you get from quad orphans is that you can eliminate some of the possibilities in the slots based on the maximum and minimum possible ranges.

easy, no need for orphans

Quad orphans -- vertical C+X=11 and horizontal H+S=9 for a difference of 2. Now what? Sorry I'm so dense.

I know how to use two orphans but didn't need any today.

Marie & Carolyn - my explanation omitted a key step. As always with orphans, you sum the rows and columns and take the difference. Here, the rows total 97 and the columns 95, so the difference is 2 and the value of the rows is 2 greater than the columns. So, the equation is C+X=H+S+2, which More...
