Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

Got to the same point as you, Chris. H & N cells must be 2&3 or 1&4. Assuming 1&4, this quickly results in L=3 which leads to two cells in 29D being 9. Error. So, H & N must be some combo of 2&3, and from there everything falls out. Don't know if this counts as a chain; kind of feels like one.

That is a chain. I also used a chain

Karl, 28A has to have three out of 1234, and a bit of prior work denies 1234 to the intersection with 20D. A bit more work and it falls into place.

Karl + 1. Tried the 14 and then 23 combos and got there.

Hard work, needed orphans.

Does a chain mean a guess, followed by possible undos or restoration of a saved version? If so, it seems to me that a chain is really an admission of defeat.

needs orphans, but it is actually quite easy:
at the point where you have 8 cells found, fill in all possibilities for 28A
1234, 57, 12, 2345678, 5678, 89

28 has the following conformations:
123589 123679 124579 124678 134569 134578 234568

each of which uses three only out of More...

Chris, you don't need to calculate all the combinations of 28A / 28/6.
since 1+2+3+4=10, you know that's not enough since that leaves 18/2.
and that 5+6+7+8=26 leaving 2/2 which is also impossible.
therefore 3 numbers out of 1,2,3,4 and the other 3 out of 5,6,7,8,9 are necessary

Thanks for the analysis today. You taught me something to think about! (20:17 included going as far as I could, doing orphans, hitting a wall, going back over to see if I missed anything, giving up and going to the comments for clues, reading through the dialogue, understanding the sense of it, going back and solving.)

John +1. Agree with Dave that a chain is an admission of defeat. But if you can do a chain in your head, it's just a logical elimination and OK. Since some us are better or worse than others at calculating in our heads, the results differ, whether you can solve it 'logically' or are defeated will differ from person to person.
