Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

Chris... I'll give you a small hint (if you don't want it, stop reading NOW... The '29 row' doesn't contain 9, so it has the numbers...)

BTW, there's no reason to use orphans

NO orphans but had to use a small chain

Yoman +2. Straightforward without orphans (or guesses).

Yoman,a hint like there is no 9 in 29 across must be meant as a joke because it would not fit in any row even if you wanted. So it was either a joke or totally useless.
I used a chain and went all the way but still lucky

Very easy. No orphans. No 9 in 29A eliminates all but 1 set of numbers that can fit in 29A, which in turn simplifies all the columns that cross it.

John... It isn't useless and wasn't joke either. Since there is no 9, the numbers have to be 8+7+6+5+3 and you can easily spot which goes where. No chains, no orphans, very simple once you get the idea.

Got it but did not find it so easy to place the numbers in 29A. The 5 is easily placed and, with orphans, so is the 7. If you recognize the 23D can be 1-2-3-4-5-8 or 1-2-3-4-6-7, I can't find an elimination that places the 3-6-8 in 29A. If you decide 23D has an 8, then it's easy, but I can't find logic to compel that conclusion without using a chain to test it.

16:18 Note to self: do not time the hard kakuro after a carb-laden weekend while sitting in a patch of sunbeam when everyone else in the household is taking a Sunday nap. In my semi-comatose state, I spent a long time looking straight at clues without realizing their potential. Not that I much More...

How come I use the numbers in ascending order and many of you use the reverse?!

It seemed like you were insulted by the hint, John. I saw that there were no 9s, but it didn't dawn on me that the row had to contain 35678 until I played with the low numbers and started working to remove candidates!

There could be a 9 in 19A though.

I don't see why G=3 rather than More...

The fact that there is only one possible combination for 29A is very useful, but I wasn't able to immediately place every number... The 5 is obvious, but for the rest, you need to look carefully at 11D and the two 7As. Frome there, the whole puzzle falls into place easily without orphans, without chains and without guessing.

big john, about G=3, look carefully at 11D and the two 7As... If you get what I'm pointing at here, you will solve 11D, which will then give you G=3.

For anyone who is still a little lost with this one (or as an exchange of notes with others who have got it):
SPOILER ALERT!
I think we all pretty much have the hang of only one possible combination in 29A (if not, observe that none of the columns can have a 9, and do your sums)...
It will More...
