Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
used orphans and then a trial and error chain. can anybody find a logic way instead of trial and error?

SPOILER:

The thing that solved this one for me, was 24 across. If you have already figured out the orphans, you know that J and P need to total 17 (i.e. 8 or 9). That means that the rest of the numbers in 24 across have to be 6 or less. Pretty easy from there on ;)

Oops, I didn't think the spoiler would be that visible! Sorry if I ruined anyone's game!

Marie - Are we doing the same puzzle? Mine for 18/October/2009 has the orphans at C & X totaling 6. Chris, I did it with orphans and with logic only, no trial and error. The key is to figure out the value of L, which leads indirectly to the value of M, after which everything is very straightforward.

EVEN MORE SPOILERS:

Mike from LA: yes. The orphans total 6, which means that X is 5 and C is 1. That also leads to T being 6 and U being 7, therefore J and P needs to be 17 :) Nice to see that there are different solving tactics though!
