Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
Very long time - Had to run an extended chain for an elimination. If you made without, I'll look back later for what I might have missed.

B,E,F,G,J,K are easy with logic. C,D,H,I,N,O must contain the 6 and 8 for the two middle columns. This forces L,M to be either 3,7 or 1,9. L=3 doesn't work for the column, so L,M = 1,9. After that, the puzzle is pretty simple.

UrBuddie - I agree it's hard. Thought I had it but failed. Still trying for a reasoned solution.

Hi Sam, Thanks for the clues. However, I'm not able to follow them. I have the same easy cells and I see that H,I have to be 6,8. But doesn't the possible 7 in N,O and that R,W could be 3 prevent the force that you describe?

I appreciate the help, I'm just missing something.

Sam: I am with you up to 'L=3 doesn't work
for the column.' Why can't we have L=3,
and {R,W}={4,5} ?

You have to check A for 6 and 8 and that gives you the possibilities listed above

Sam - great job. I do have that {NO}={6,7,8,9}. that means DIMO={6,7,8,9} therefore SX={4,5}
Now in 36D since L={1,3} is must be smallest digit, therefore RW must contain a 4 or 5 but not both. Becuase 28A T={1,2} cannot have 3, therefore cannot have both 4 and 5; so 4&5 are excluded from Q&R.
So W={4,5}...

don't see what all the fuss is about, this was easy. it just takes several applications of the unique rule (and orphans)

looking at this again, orphans are not needed
