Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
no orphans, good puzzle, needs some thought

I must of missed something; I couldn't see how to solve it without using a chain.

Karl,for no orphan solution,
36D and 39D must contain:
789 789
xx xx
5789 5789
789 789
6789 6789
xx xx
which eliminates 789 in the xx rows

then work on the possible confirmations for 17A and 21A

Chris, I'm not following. Which 789s are eliminated?
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
Using Chris' logic I was able to eliminate the 789s in the intersections of 21A and 17A with 36D and 39D. That wasn't very many.

OK. Did it without orphans but used a chain. Chris' logic got me part way.

Paul, after the 789 eliminations, you need to write down all possible conformations of 21A and 17A and determine which work and which don't. IIRC this gives more eliminations within 36D and 39D and eventually the whole thing works out.

Quite hard today.did not use orphans but used some advice from Chris and still a lot of thinking

Chris +1.

reset at almost 15 minutes - 4+5+9<>17 !
this is indeed a stinker of a puzzle even with orphans. I'm not sure if even after using Chris' logic I could pick a chain that would be all that was necessary to finish (or finish with the alternative after it failed). Doesn't it take even longer than using chains to write down all the possibilities ... ?
