Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
chain

Urgh. Needed chain, second day in a row.

A very quick solve with one good assumption at 35A.

Tough one. I proved the positive, but never solved the negative. Getting lazy.

I used the 'unique solution' logic, but in a more complicated 3 x 2 case. Then the puzzle was easy. Otherwise I needed a chain to prove the answer without the unique solution logic.

After one wrong guess to find a sequence, by the process of elimination after that it was very easy.

steve, agree on second try. 3x2 unique logic eliminates the 78 pair possibility for 15D. Then it solves itself.

I tried again after noticing something else: one can subtract out sums of other columns (ala orphans) to deduce that the first three cells of 39D must be equal to 20 and the last three cells must add up to 19. This narrows down possibilities for these cells which lead to solution. Neat!

Chris - that's exactly what I did - but I like Karl's approach better.

Good Puzlle, chains not needed

Good puzzle. Used one chain and got it rich the first time. I'm going to go back and think about Chris and Karl's logic.

OK. I'm not getting why the 78 combination in 15D creates a two solution scenario. Also I'm really not getting how Karl isolated the two groups of cells in 39D.
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
Paul, I'll take a shot at the explanation:
1) Unique solution logic - (2 x 2 first) if the possible numbers for the intersection of two rows and two columns are the same two numbers (say 1,2) {note, rows and columns must be unbroken to the 4 cells in question} then If 1,2 ; 2,1 is a solution, More...

used the right chain in 15 down and went all the way.pretty lucky

thanks, guys
I never would've gotten it had I not read the 2X3 unique solution part of your analysis. spent lots of time on chains, but the eliminations weren't there - 2 or more nodes is a dead end! I'm gonna redo it with Karl's idea.

it took me 8:33 from the place where all the candidates were in tho I overlooked the elimination of 9s from the bottome 2 rows (requiring it in the 1st row of 24D)

Is it possible that both the elimination of the 78 in 15D and the 39=20+19 in 39D are necessary?!

No, I finished in 5:04 after I put 9 in 21A/24D (and had to retrace after a mistake in the top part)
