Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
Had to work a little bit on this one...

Mike from LA: could you please go back to 6/18/08 hard and let me know what you think of these orphans? I could solve it without the orphans, but I'm just not seeing the normal rules applying, unless I'm missing something. Thx.

This was hard. Needed the orphans to show that one of the two possibilities for 24A led to a trial and error chain failure and even after that it was quite tricky.

Anyone find a logic solution?

Logic solution around 6's

I had 5 numbers filled in, and J as 7 or 9. But I noticed if J were 9, then P could not be 7 (simple chain to see whewn using orphans), thus J must be 7 and easy from there. This was still a logic chain, but easy enough to do without needing the 'undo' function.

Used orphans and guessed.

With orphans:

Fill in H,T,U,Z. If 1234 in 24A then I=5,J=9, no room for 7's in 35D, 29D and orphans. So 24A=1/2/3/5/6/7. This nails down I,J.

6 in K makes Q too small, so 6 in N, and from Z we know where the 2 and 3 go. So 24A is filled in.

38A has only one place for 6. Now 32D has only one plae for 9. Finish 28D and orphans and rest is easy.
