Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
Hey Mike from Mikeland -- On yesterday's puzzle, did you just do a bunch of guessing? Or did you actually find a strategy that worked?

Thanks.

UrBuddie from Illinois - I guessed a lot yesterday.

Thanks Mike.

If anyone has any hints other than guessing for yesterday's puzzle, I would really appreciate it. I keep learning new techniques here, but yesterday's puzzle did not seem to fit any of them.

I agree that yesterday's puzzle was tough and guessing seemed to be the only solution. I took care of the orphans and used the other techniques I know, but nothing helped. If anyone knows how to solve that puzzle without guesswork, please share.

I did not guess yesterday; that's why it took so long! I will describe how I solved it in the next day or so.

Yesterday's was really tough. I had logged all the possibilitities, calced the orphans, done a few eliminations and I think even had a couple numbers in, then got called away & lost my time. Later I loaded my save and it still took over 7 minutes to finish, so my total time was probably More...

It's quite possible that I don't understand some of the tactics as well as I should. To me, trial runs are equivalent to what I call guessing. If I'm simply inserting a number, then running the puzzle as far as I can to see if the newest number works, that's guessing. I would like to believe that More...

I did get one number yesterday with a single contradiction chain - see comment from yesterday (still didn't help much).

I agree that just running trial numbers is guessing and no fun. It should be possible to solve these with logic and no guesses.
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
In reality, guessing and logic is the same if you try all possibilities then eliminate those that lead to a contradiction. If you find a 'guess' that works - it is not a proof unless you show other possible guesses lead to contradictions. I usually do it by picking one possibility I think is More...

7:19 I tend not to like to do 'trial runs' and saving/loading if possible. Although it's still a process of elimination, I like to try to keep it all in my head, even if there are multiple steps involved in a single elimination.

No special techniques for Hard one on Dec 9th. For those interested here is how I solved it without guessing.
Similar approach to Steve: assume something and prove a contradiction. If your 'guess' is correct you have to go back and prove alternative guesses lead to a contradiction, otherwise ow More...

5:49 Great discussion. I didn't do yesterday's puzzle yet, so it appears I have a challenge waiting for me. I too tend to do a lot of saving/loading. I wish I could keep it all in my head as Chris from Perth does, but my head doesn't seem to be capable of keeping track of it all!

Slarti - Thanks for all the work. It was pretty close to the same things I did, I just kept hoping that there was a more elegant way to solve it.

Thanks!
