Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

Are others reporting times till you've found a
solution or till you've found a proof of
uniqueness?

9:34 - bit harder today

I always try to prove uniqueness, but I only posted a time once - I don't like 'doing it for time' Today's time would have been over 20 minutes, this one was harder for me than they have been lately

4:44 - with proof of uniqueness

This one is tricky for me. Anyone have any hints I can use to figure it out?

8:09 I used proof of uniqueness then one educated guess for the key then it fell out. The key ended up being the likely solution of 7 or 8 in the 14 column. Note 8min is total time that I put my first number in the puzzel, if I have to restart I dont post a time.

15:32 time from when I enter the first number (may just be a possibility) until solution. This may include a lot of false starts (three, in this instance), as I save and then try out different solutions.

I had to use an extended chain for 1 elimination, then straightforward.

no orphans

12:18 2nd time thru - a couple chains

Orphans, which weren't a lot of help, then chains. Ugh.

Possible to solve w/o orphans:
1. Solve 5 and 6 in 35D
2. 3 36A cells <=5, so 36A contains 543
3. If Z=5. then can't solve 4-cell 14D and/or 3-cell 9A (NQR contains 123)
4. If 3A=12, then force: 4A=13, N=1, DE=27, IJM=978, PQ=23 (but can't solve 12A)
5. If P=2, then force: N=1, DE=27, JX=74 (but problems with 3s in 11D and/or 15D)

Even with orphans, too many chains needed, 2017
