Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
easy with orphans

Must be easy, I could do it!

I still struggled even after using orphans

Agree with John.

Easy for you guys. Not so much for me. Still not hung up on the completion thing.

After using orphans, possibilities are reduced, but I still couldn't see a way to solve the problem without using a chain (nearly any starting point will work). But I don't count any puzzle that requires a chain as being 'easy'.

Agree completely with Karl. It's not a question of easy or hard. If a puzzle requires a chain, it's not worth solving. Anyone can solve any of these by trial and error. Finding a logical solution is the reward. If none, it is a poor puzzle.

I guess I really don't know what a 'chain' is. I always thought you meant 'This is either x or y; if x then that is a and so that is b ..., and so there is a contradiction; therefor this is y'. But that's a logical solution and acceptable. What is this non-logical solution called a 'chain'? I do know what orphans are and use them sometimes.

Possible without orphans - the trick is finding where the 8 goes (or doesn't go) in 39A

With orphans, agree with Karl.
Beginning on the 16 with 9 ( the correct option) and we have a logical solution

Possible without orphans -- the trick is finding where the 9 goes (or doesn't go) in 39A. (with apologies to kakuroaddict!)

Needs long chains? I couldn't find any logic in this...
