Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

Great puzzle. Took orphans, chains, and a lot of time to work it out.

imo, if it takes chains it is not a great puzzle

There was one possiblity in B that seemed unlikely (quite restritive) and it was not a difficult chain to show this led to a contradiction. Then the puzzle became a 'good one' in that logic, but not trivial solved the puzzle - I think its a pretty good 'chain' puzzle.

It might have been possible to avoid orphans, but by the time I got far enough for the orphans to be useful, I had spent so much time that ... well ....
Good puzzle.

22:12 orphans and only one guess/elimination chain. X={2,4}. correct 'guess' and everything came together.

Agree with Chris, if chains are needed, then the puzzle is more like hard work than enjoyable. I can do this with chains, but that's just an unsatisfactory solution

Orphans not needed, the key is on the 17, just one possibility, good puzlle

Superb puzzle. Can solve without chains (but need orphans). Key, for me, was to see that U must be 8; later that M cannot be 5. From there, things fall out. Pure logic; no guessing.

Solved the puzzle first then looked at comments. Using Karl's comment on 2nd attempt, I figured out the possibilities for U (intersection of 18A and 36D, right?). Must be 8 or one other value. Tried the other value which led to a contradiction. Now if I could just figure out quicker ways to identify those scenarios ...
