Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.
Other variations

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
stuck, might be giving up too early though

Ugh. Had to use a couple of chains to solve.

clue for logic solution: it's all in the 7's and the fact that the 489 solution to 21A would be 7-free.

Orphans needed.

X=7 because, if X!=7 then the 7s quad in 27D and 35D eliminates 7's in 21A. No 7's in 21A forces the 489 solution, but the 4 takes out all the 7's in 27D. More...

One of the toughest in recent memory - 11:00 with orphans and a rather long chain.

almost 25 minutes even with orphans!

why not use X<>7 rather than X=!7 ?
where is Fleurance?

big John, Fleurance is in Armagnac, != is computer logic, <> is maths, both mean the same thing

Chris, I can't see how the 7s quad in 27 & 35D. With what other number, 9?

the elimination of 7 from 13A (leaving only 5) is fairly short - anyone do it in their head?

if X=7, then there'll be a 7 quad with the 79 (16A) and the first two of 39A, which means 35D and 27D would have to contain a 7 each and 21A is 7-free

Needed one chain.

Thanks, Chris. Got it. I think the word 'quad' refers to 2 pairs that enable a dual solution rather than X7 / 7X possibilities though. The 4 causing exclusion of 7 in 27D seems to be the key to this puzzle.

Did you see that when you have 21 = X + Y + 69 that 6 & 9 are excluded from X & Y ?! I think that fact will come in handy for me in future puzzles.

Struggled but finally solved with orphans. Three trials.

great puzzle, just had to keep plugging away at it. no chains needed, but used orphans

15:18 with orphans and trial and error. I agree that the 27D 3&7 or 4&6 decision is the key to the puzzle.

worked out an easier logic: the key is 21A. And the crosspoints between 27D,35D and 24A,29A.

If 21A is 489, then there's no 7's in the crosspoints forcing X=7.

If 21A is 579 or 678, then there's no 7's in the crosspoints either, forcing X=7 in all variations. also solving 13A=58, and solving most of 24A.
