Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

I used orphans and still a good puzzle

started easy for me, but then required a difficult mental chain in the end. But no orphans needed.

chain or orphans, take your pick ...

Solved without orphans or chains. Nice puzzle.

Hint: After getting the first nine cells filled in, notice that the first three cells of 26D & 31D will add up to 22 in one case and 24 in the other. And the 24 cannot be in 31D as that would force T == 4 and there would be a uniqueness problem.

No orphans, needed to fill in possibilities, but fairly straightforward after that.

Karl, that one, the thinking after the 22/24 split in 26D and 31D was what I called a chain! Ok, small chain. The philosophical question is where's the dividing line between small chain and logic? Like Humpty Dumpty, I guess it is wherever I want it to be, but Alice objects ...

My view is that a chain is the process of filling in cells and then backing them out if they prove to be a dead end. Of course, we do the same in our heads, and I consider that to be part of the game. A chain, as described here, seems to me like an admission of defeat; if I get to that point, I abandon the puzzle.

No orphans. No chains. I must have made a lucky mistake because I thought it it was a fairly easy puzzle.

Chris, I've never seen an official defn of chain, but my conception of one is similar to Dave's (i.e., you dive down the rabbit hole without knowing where it's going --- I like Alice references, too). The 22/24 thing, above (i.e. seeing that three combo pairs have to break out as 679 or 789), is More...

I think chain is just another word for trial and error, or guessing. The use of orphans is more logical.

I agree with you, Paul. I would always use orphans before using trial and error. Question which arose was whether narrowing possibilities is necessarily equivalent to trial and error. [I'd argue 'not necessarily'].
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
Narrowing possibilities requires mental trial/error. If this, then that, then something else, which is impossible, so this cannot be correct. I don't see how you can avoid that kind of thing.

Doing it mentally increases the challenge level. Doing it by filling in cells and then backing them out pretty much eliminates the challenge.

John +1. Agree with Dave, Paul and Karl about chains and rabbit holes.

funny one.

OK. I buy what Dave is saying. The basic process of elimination involves simple metal chains, the operative word being mental. As soon as you start entering numbers on a 'let's see' basis your trial and error becomes guessing. If you can eliminate without actually entering numbers I'm good with that. :-)

Straightforward with orphans. I agree with Karl regarding spotting combos is not necessarily a chain, but then I prefer using orphans to uniqueness. 2019

Great puzzle, no orphans nor chains, it's all about applying the unique rule a couple of times in different places.
