Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
Take your pick, +o-p or -o+r (regardless of a certain value in a certain row)

I was trying to set up either a 3s cross or a 5s cross in 19A with a row above

Nada, and one of the easiest puzzles ever. Can't figure out why everyone didn't get Nada. On the bottom row (30A) all the values are forced. Since S=8, 19A must have a 5 and R is the only place it can go. Because Z=8, P cannot be larger than 5 and there is only one combo that satisfies that. 24D number are all forced. The puzzle solved itself in about 1 minute.

Mike, well done. I couldn't place the 24D numbers in my head and had to resort to +p, then it was simple.

Mike, what about 236 or 146 options for 11A? Because of 3 options for 11A, I figured out that regardless of 5 in 19A, V=3 (then the rest was easy).

Why can't U=5?

Aspie nada in head.
solve 30A=6978
3's X in 15A and 18A if B=9
3's X in 13A and 18A if B=78

therefore 7D=43, 11A=254 etc easy then

thanks Aspie

Agree with me from here - I needed to put in possibilities and run a chain to eliminate the possibility of U=5.
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
I see a lot of strange logic in some of these supposed solutions.

Mike, I am not sure how R is the only place for the 5. U can equal 5 - you have to do what everyone would agree is a chain to show that U can't be a 5.

Aspie, how can 13A be part of a 3's X when it only has one 3 More...

me, I agree with your response to Mike, but I also agree with Aspie. My to-do list includes documenting another way to paraphrase Aspie's excellent approach (unless someone beats me to it first).

OK. I have a feeling the Martian made a typo or left out some steps I am not 'seeing'. Thanks.

Ack. I see it now. FWIW, I wouldn't have called it a '3's X' for B=78.

me from here, I am pleased you can now see what I saw

in other words, AFK contains 3 and DI contains 3 (regardless of 9 in 24D). Perhaps not a traditional 3's X (to me's point), but still an excellent strategy by Aspie.

Is an extension of cross concept. simple 3 cross has four possible place for 3's in two columns. Cross 'eats' the 3's. This cross has five possible place for 3's in two columns (via 24D). This cross also eats the 3's. Same concept. There many extensions to cross concept.

you're right Aspie, others have noted variations of the cross concept.

Straightforward with Aspie's hint on 3s, thanks again Aspie, 2021.
