Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

I must've missed something, because I needed orphans and a chain.

I used orphans and a whole lot of time. Brutal puzzle for me.

Chris +1. No orphans, no chains. Must have been having a good day, because it seemed fairly easy. 21A is the key; look at the max values W & Y can have, and that limits what X & Z can be. Other eliminations leave only two places for 1's in 10D and 23D, and that forces other values in 18A and 17A. It all falls into place.

Mike, I don't get the logic. How can you calculate a max value for Y without using orphans. Y is an orphan. I get a max value of 9.

it's in the four corners of 21A and 25A. if you have 8 in one corner, you don't get 56 in the corresponding horizontal corner. You do get 56 in the opposite diagonal corner.

That's enough to eliminate the 5 from the 17D and 21A intersection.

The 12,12,12 trio ensure there's a 2 either More...
