Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
nada, thanks to crosses

Nada hint spoiler ...

17D is 56 solution, locates 3 in 38A
for the two longs 36A and 38A can provide a maximum of one 8 or one 9. 22D can provide only one 8 or 9 (which makes it the 589 solution by the way). Hence 11D must provide an 8 and 18D must provide an 8 or a 9.

For comparison: 5 or 6 in two longs.

Used possibilities and orphans, then tried a long chain which solved it.

EASY NADA WITH P+

11:31 with orphans, no possibilities. (A variation on this might eliminate the orphans):

1. Fill in orhpans.

2. Count all missing 9's: There are three or four across and three or four down. So 14A has 9 iff 18D has 9.

3. Count all missing 7,8,9's: there are eleven More...

Chris: I don't understand how you located the 3 in 38A. Why couldn't it have been in the 36A (along with a 5 and a 4)?

more details on my 5/6 nada approach:
1. 5 or 6 required in four columns (22D, 31D, 30D, and 17D), so 36A contains 156789.
2. 18D contains 1278 (can't contain 4, 5 or 6).
3. 7x in JPIO or JPKQ (depending on 7 in 24A).
4. Rest of puzzle is easy (I started with 11D, since it can't contain 5, 6, or 7).

Willo, can't be in 36A=345789 because then there would be no place at all for the necessary 3 in 38A (first four cells in both 36A and 38A must all be >=5)

Correction, 18D could have a 4.
But the 3 in 38D can't be in 11D because 11D has to have an 8.
