Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

Used Orphans

Took the challenge of solving w/o orphans:
1. Fill in possibilities (start with 12A and 34A)
2. Used short chain to prove X<>2, so W < 7
3. I could then solve G, D, A, 16D, 24D, and 17D (bottom)
4. Eliminated one possibility for T. Finally easy after that

Don, what is the short chain that proves X can't=2?

Decided to use orphans. Pretty easy then. Cute prairie dogs.

Used orphans. [IMHO, orphans are always preferable to using chains.]

Paul,
I filled in 9 cells when I saw that X<>2 led to a contradiction (no 7 available for the bottom row), tho I saw that after filling in 5 on the redo.
I think it involved 31D needing an 8 & a 9 and eliminations that causes in 26A, 7s eliminations ...
which I doubt I would've been able to see in my head. I use the save & load feature quite a bit!

are they really dogs?!??!?
anyways the key for me was to find the 4&5&6 cells in 39 column and with the help of 15 column (only possible combination is 9&6) all the pieces would eventually come together, fun puzzle for sure :D

Paul and Chris and others, if x were 2, a total of 9 cells must be 8 or 9. Contradiction arises when trying to place 7s that would be required in bottom part of puzzle.

Some great dialog about this puzzle! SAMurai, did I miss something easy about eliminating 87 for 15D?
