Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
can't find a way to even start - no cells found at all. stuck (except for trial and error)

Well, got it, but I had to make (intuitive)guesses three times. All three panned out, first try, but not nice 'logical' solution.

Solved - but ugly - needed 1 logic chain to get started (on O to eliminate one possibility) - then another one on Y to continue - still not trivial after that - someone must have a better way.

One number so far - I=6 after prooving that S cannot be a six. Will keep trying.

I used the orphans, which came in handy, but otherwise solved it by logic, no chains or guessing. One of the keys for me was the two 16 downs in relation to the 39 across. Figure out whether the 4's and 6's can go. Then concentrate on 23 across. There are also some unique things about the possiblities for 20 down. It all falls into place.

To Mike from LA.I can understand that the 4 and 6 can only go in D and H.How do you get to decide logically where the 4 or 6 goes. The 4 can go in D , O, T and Z.I chose the 4 in D on a trial and I filled al the left side of the puzzle and a few cells on the right side then I was left with another More...

Did it with logic, but just grinding through, eliminating possibilities, then grinding through what's left. If there is an easy way, I sure didn't find it.

found a logical solution. knowing orphans =10
w>4 and s>4 therefore tuvx<5
u not 5 therefore f not 5
P = 5 6 7 therefore r<5
then h=6 d=4 and z=6 etc.

ah ha, I think I got the logic solution ....
The bottom 2 cells of 20D (Q and W) contain 1234 and 5678. Either Q=1234, W=5678; or Q=5678, W=1234.

If Q=5678 then V (intersection 8D with 23A) must be 567.

Either way, the high pair (67 or 58) in 23A are now partly accounted for, and More...
