Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

Paul from Canada, did you go without possibilities on yesterday's hard puzzle?

does anyone else look at the solution to get the sum of the orphans? I gave up on calculating it quite a while ago. I do 'mini orphans' calcs when needed, though.

Big John - yes - I'm lazy the same way with orphans - I like the finding the 'logic' for solving the puzzles rather than getting proficient in applying the same logic - so I also used what I'd call mini-orphans today - I had solved for s, x, v and 16D meant u+z = 16, so 34a + 28a --> (r+w) + More...

nada. I calculate orphans when I use them. Have never looked at the solution for any purpose.

if I want to use orphans, I look at the puzzle solution to get the sum. it makes no difference to me what the puzzle says is the answer, I only want to be able to solve by logic, so knowing the answer beforehand is neither relevent nor useful

Big John - yes - without possibilities yesterday.

Nada. I got stuck, almost gave up, and just when I was checking 'This number is a possibility' saw the light. Took me 09:19, though.

I still need to review Steve's comments for relevancy on harder puzzles. Here was my nada approach:

1. Solve 7453 in 22D
2. Solve 16D
3. 35D must contain 236789, so 28A contains 13789.
4. FA and FI both contain 89, so solve D.
5. Rest of puzzle is easy.

the fact that 18D must have an 8 breaks it wide open

Steve, isn't RWUZ sum 33, not 31? Even so, I appreciate your comments. I need to get better at 'row and/or column subtotals' (whether they involve orphans or not).

I originally documented an approach where key steps 3 and 4 related to top. Because of Steve's comments, I decided to find More...

I couldn't figure out how to finish this one without orphans this morning. I (and all you nada people) must've used a mental chain at the end. definitely a fun puzzle.
