Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
orphans and probably I had more of a struggle than I should

Seemed easy at first, but proved to be tricky. Needed orphans, too.

Didn't like this one, or didn't see something --- had to resort to using a chain --- a short one, but I hate guessing (i.e., using trial and error) to solve a puzzle.

Karl, trying again, using orphans, I think it is 35A that starts to solve it, the three high num groups (FHJ) must hold 789.

Then plot the conformations for the two bottom rows. That limits the orphan in 21A which affects the other orphan and allows a partial solve of 35A. Everything falls out after that.

Thanks, Chris. The thing I missed was that F could not be 6. Doh! From there it was pretty straightforward.

almost 24 with 5 & 6 chains in the middle, then the top orphan

Is it assumed we all readily see it (you've trained me to look for this - thanks a lot), or did you experts neglect to mention that the 1s in the bottom 2 rows can only go in 3,4D? That eliminates 7 from the orphan in 35A

I did get the F<>6 wrinkle, but at the end of my 2nd go at it (over 22 minutes!).

It took me less than 4 minutes from the initial stage using the wrong number in H (I chose the wrong number on purpose). Too bad it takes me so long to figure these puzzles out.

Is it so terrible to use chains / guesses? I still look at orphans as sort of cheating, but I'm beginning to think they're the best way to start (especially when I can do the math and check it in under 1:20). Do some of you check the comments before deciding to use orphans??

Interesting. Used orphans and guessed right about 18A, but should have worked harder.

Eliminating 6 from F solves it for me with no orphans.
