How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Filled in the bottom two rows, then added across and down to get the top orphan, then completed the puzzle. Does that count as using orphans?

Some puzzles are like that - easy, but just not worth plowing through all of the possibilities to finish it off when you can just grab the orphan. Technically not nada, which I define as you can explain all the way through completion to someone, but a matter of convenience.

an orphan is an orphan is an orphan. the way you figured out the upper orphan is the exact same logic used to figure out both orphans, so i'd say that you used orphans. your example goes a long ways towards legitimizing orphans as an acceptable tool in solving the puzzle. the concept of nada has More...

4:33 used orphans the same way willo did. like me from here, I don't see the big deal in using orphans or why it makes it a lesser win but on the other hand if people enjoy challenging themselves to do it nada style, more power to them - it's all for fun
