Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

Calculated helpful orphans then slogged through a lot of chains using possibilities to keep track of the process of elimination. Inelegant puzzle.

Nada. I thought it was very elegant.

my only chain eliminated E=5. Mike, how did you do nada?

My nada approach: A&B must be 1,2 or 3. C is 1 or 2. So D=4 & E=5, which means O=1, P=2. So 13=256 (274 is no good because you need the 4 elsewhere.) Then look at the lowest possible value for each of the cells in 29D, which is helped by looking at what 11D can be. You can figure out what F is and that tells you Q=4. Keep looking at 29D and it all falls into place.

Sorry, I meant V=4, not Q.

Mike, How did you eliminate 5 from A?
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
from what I can tell, chain eliminates A=5: 11D=542, BC is 12 pair, 10D=37, 8D=26 (but can't solve 29D). Mike, did you find something simpler?
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
Jimmy - I figured out that F cannot be 4. If F is 6, 7 or 8, so that eliminates A=5. Can't recall how I decided F > 4 w/o doing it all over again.

Don, no it wasn't simpler. I looked at it from the standpoint of what works in 29D. If A=5, then 11D is 542, which makes L=9, so then G and H are 76 pairs, which makes I=9 or 8, which makes D= 1 or 2, which can't be.

ok, thanks Mike & Don
