Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

What started out looking like the same old puzzle was quite difficult for me. I had to use orphans, then it was easy.

It's the same old puzzle with a slight twist. Can be done without orphans or possibilities.

Hmm. Not seeing the twist. A litle help Mark?

S, U, W, Z must be 56. Therefore, no 5s in 17 or 19 across, therefore P = 7, G = 8 and it all falls in place.

Thanks Mark, but hmmm.

This is where I'm at...S and U must be 56, but W and Z can be 3456 and N and Q in 17A can be 5's. No 5's in 19A because L must be 9 in 30D.

How did you eliminate 3 and 4 from W and Z? Thanks!

Joe +1. I used the same approach as Mark, but I still had to use orphans to avoid chains.

Joe + 2. I also can't see how you can eliminate the 4 from Z?
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
Easy with orphans, but without orphans I couldn't find a way to eliminate 34 in W and Z, When you get Y settled with orphans the 34s disappear immediately. The rest falls into place.

I can eliminate 34 from W and 3 from Z with painstaking observation of the interaction of possibilities in both directions (glorified chains), but can only eliminate 4 from Z with a lengthy chain or trial-and-error (call it what you will), but haven't found any other way to do so.

Beat that dead horse didn't I? :D

There is no shame in using orphans. They are an exercise in logic. When Y has to be 7 or 8 you need the 56s.

I have to completely agree with Paul (and 'me' too). Did you guys eliminate the 3s & 4s from S,U,W,Z except 4 in Z in your heads?? At 1st I thought that the 56, 56 was an illegal quad. I think I tried 7 in 17A as my chain

It is easy to notice that I=2: If I=4 then 17 has twice >=4 with 21D, which is impossible. Then it is easy.
