Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

no orphans, but it took a little time to figure out the necessity of 4s on the bottom 2 rows

Certainly easy with orphans; I couldn't see (quickly) how to proceed without them.

Joe +1. Clever how the need for 4's is figured out.

Z=8 forces U=7, which leads to neither 18A nor 19A with a 4 as part of their solution, which deprives 22D of any 4's. Thus Z!=8.

me, you only know that if you've calculated orphans, right? Otherwise the orphan in 22D could be a 4.

No orphans. Instead of the 4's, I focused on the placement of 1's and 2's in the last two rows. Excellent puzzle, I thought. Different than the ones we have been getting.

5:46 with the 2nd orphan

I got 11 numbers including the left orphan (, Paul) when I peeked at the right orphan.
(or deprives 15A of 5, me)
AND since there has to be a 2 in each of the bottom 2 rows, O<> which excludes 8 from P & therefore U=8
Nice puzzle!

Sorry me, got it figured out that the orphan in 22D can't be a 4. So I agree that Z can't be 8. But I'm still stuck there.

Hmmm. Paul, I tried to recreate what i did once Z!=8 but I can't...I must have subconcisouly made an assumption that solved it for me. I'll look further into it...grrr.

Thanks Big John. 4s didn't do anything for me but pointing out the 2s (which are now obvious) was the key for me. Done without orphans then.

MIke, Thanks for the orphan info. Definitely helps.

me, I got to the Z!=8 because it eliminated 4s from the last two rows.

Took me 08:30, which is pretty fast for a difficult for me (heck, I can solve them only about 50% of the time).

I have a small request: could someone be kind enough to help me out with the terminology as I am a Kakuro newbie: what is the meaning of terms 'orphan' and 'chain'. Also, I have More...

Jussi - see yesterday or the day before for a complete description of orphan. What constitutes a chain has been a matter of considerable discussion. To some, including me. It means picking a combination and running it through mentally to see if it works. If you have to resort to entering More...

It's a fairly quick nada after recognizing that there are limitations on 24D because of the across sums. The left 4 cells of each of the two rows can't total the same or you won't have uniqueness. So you can't have 24D be 789 or 978.
Solving most of the top leads to L=2. Since both of the bottom More...

Straightforward, no orphans, once z not equal to 8 is seen. I used the 5s rather than 4s, i.e. if 24 D = 978 then both bottom rows need 5s, but that conflicts with 5 pair in 2nd row, 2019
