Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.
  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!
at first sight, orphans appear useless. and can't find a logical way to begin .... stuck.

Mercifully, my browser crashed somewhere around the 23 minute mark.

Had to use a chain. Orphans are no use at all.

I don't like these where the only way to proceed is guessing. There are too many like this lately.
I can't be bothered to finish.

No orphans (glad I didn't waste my time based on the other comments). No chains (just mental chains). Very good puzzle.

way too much guessing involved.

Orphans provide no information. Spent a lot of time on eliminations. Picked the 6 in 21A and went all the way. Pure luck. Hate guessing puzzles.

tried it again and Paul is right.find the 6 in 21 a and you go all the way.
John from New York.A mental chain is a chain but in your case I am surprised you did not say you did not need the possibilities

Don't waste time calculating orphans. Not just for today's puzzle but any puzzle...just click SHOW SOLUTION and add the two numbers. Be honest and don't cheat!

Seems like it is possible without chains, but I haven't found the trick yet. Thought I had found it when I realized if W=9 then you end up with an unusual non-unique solution situation in LMRS - L&M possibles are 3456 and R&S possibles are 1234 AND L+R=7 and M+S=7, which I think is More...

Me, I'm Ok with doing that where there are two orphans, but not for the very occasional quad.

Following up on previous post...

2 simple mental chains solve it along with lots of eliminations. M!=8 because it would require L=6, R=S=1 (no good). Rumble along, then show that J!=9 because it would require D=E=9 (no good). Solves after that.

I agree Paul!

I'm with Paul. Decided this could not be done logically and bagged it.

I think I am wrong about the non-unique solution.
free kakuro puzzles | online kakuro puzzles
Only non-unique situation I found to avoid was a square of 13 combos.

peek and add to find orphans, quite so. I wondered why nobody else appeared to do it that way.
