Kakuro Kakuro
How to play Kakuro
Kakuro is similar to both sudoku and traditional crossword games.
Like a Crossword
Similar to crosswords, Kakuro has clues both across and down. When you put numbers in the vacant squares, the sum must equal the given clues. This is why the game is sometimes called 'cross sums'.
Like a Sudoku
Just like a sudoku, you cannot have the same number in a row or column. If a row is broken into 2 areas by a clue, then you can have the same number occuring once in each of the separate areas.

Choose a number, and place it in the grid above.

Talk about anything and everything, but nice to each other - you don't have to agree, but this is not the place for personal attacks. As Sir Paul McCartney said: 'I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird' (longer explanation). Enjoy!

this appears to need a small, inhead chain, orphans not needed

I used orphans

no orphans, no chains, just time - lots of it

Found the first definite number, made a lucky guess on the second number, and it all fell into place.

Not difficult, no orphans needed. Key was...

recognizing the limits in 36-down from the two 10-across, limits in 20-across at the bottom, then putting the 4 in 36-across and following the 1's. Took about 4 minutes, no guessing.

Joe + 1. Nice puzzle.

Interesting puzzle. No orphans needed. Not sure if what I did counts as a chain but it involved eliminating the 3's (and thus the 5's) from 36D by recognizing that a 3+4 or 4+3 in M+O won't work because of constraints in 34A and the lower 10A.

me + 1. I think the fairly short mental elimination of the 34 combo in 36D doesn't count as a chain.

Great strategy, me from here (36D is not 345789). Unlike Dan, I did not find the 'no guess' method. I happened to guess right that 36D had no 3, then happened to guess right on placement of 1 in 21D.

chain required to solve for me

me - yup, that was my short chain

Dan from LA - what does 'following the 1's' mean? I couldn't see it

Seemed quite straight forward - just elimination of possibilities

@Chris - I had to figure it out all over again!
I think I had mentally done Aspie's step in the first part of my comment, then the 1s is an obvious logic step. Also, place the 4 in 34A since there is no 36A.
